Your lawn is coming in beautiful, but alas you notice mole trails of grass and dirt pushed up into mounds that ruin your wonderful lawn. Although a limited amount of moles are good for your lawn maybe two or three, because they aerate the dirt and don’t stay in one place for too long too many moles can be a problem for lawns such as with irrigation and by uprooting the grass plants. With some patience and common garden tools, you can get rid of them at no cost.
The first method you can use is with a plain spade shovel. What you do is walk over the entire mole trail slowly. Take short steps and push the grass and dirt back to its original position as you walk over the mole mound. The lawn should be level when you are done. Moles are blind creatures, but have acute hearing and smell. The hearing is so excessive you will scare them away. If they burrow deeper underground when they hear you, you may not be able to capture it if you don’t do it right.
Have a shovel ready and sit down quietly on your lawn. Scan the lawn for signs of the mole’s movement in their tunnel. Moles tend to eat during the morning, noon and evening so pick a time to search for them then. When you observe an old tunnel being expanded, slowly and quietly inspect the end of the trail for slight movement of the grass. Grab your shovels, silently return to the spot where you think the mole is and look for further grass movement of the mole digging. Insert the spade shove into the back area of where the mole is working. Insert your other shovel in front of the area where the mole is working about 6 to 8 inches from the first shovel. The moles will crash into the shovels and freeze from fright between them both. Place a small trashcan or large water bucket over the trapped mole, scoop it up and move it as far away as possible from your lawn.
Alternative techniques of ridding moles are spraying a solution of oil, dishwashing soap, castor oil and cayenne pepper diluted with warm water on your lawn. Spray this mixture over and into the mole’s tunnels also. You can also place a water hose in the opening of the mole tunnel and flood it with plain water; but the most effective way I found to rid moles is to buy a box of camphor balls and get a thin dole stick and poke holes into the mole tunnel. Insert the camphor balls with your finger. Moles will be gone in 24hrs the smell of camphor balls drives them away.
