Possums are fascinating creatures. While they may not be the most popular animals for some reason, they certainly have unique characteristics worth learning. We will look at some of the opossum facts and teach you all about what it is that possums eat.

Possum facts

For example, possums are the only marsupial in North America. This means they have a pouch on their stomach where their young can live until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Possums also have a prehensile tail, which helps them climb trees and support them when hanging from branches.

What do possums eat?

In general, possums are omnivores, which means they will eat both plants and animals. Possums have been known to eat over 200 different types of food! Some of the things possums eat include insects, rodents, snakes, birds, eggs, fruit, and even garbage. Possums are not picky eaters! Not only do they eat both plants and animals. Many possums will often eat just about anything they can find! Their favorite foods include fruits, vegetables, insects, small mammals, and even carrion. Possums are also one of the few animals immune to snake venom.

Opossum life cycle

Possums are nocturnal creatures, which means they are most active at night. During the day, possums will sleep in trees or dens that they build themselves. Possums are excellent climbers and can even hang upside down from their tails! During their lifetime, possums will go through several stages of development. For example, when they are born, possums are only about the size of a jellybean. They will then spend the next four months living in their mother’s pouch. After leaving the pouch, possums will continue to grow and develop until they reach adulthood at around six months old. Once they reach adulthood, possums will begin to mate and start the cycle round.

Opossums typically live for two years in the wild. However, some possums have been known to live for four years and might live even longer when cared for in captivity. While possums may not be the most popular animals, they are certainly interesting creatures. If you ever can see one up close, take the opportunity! You might find yourself liking possums more than you thought. Thanks for reading! I hope this gave you a better understanding of these unique animals and their life cycle.
